Step-by-step guide on How to shoot a dance video – briefly explained

Dance videos are trending like a fireball on various platforms such as youtube, tik tok, and Instagram. If you are a dancer and you want to showcase your dancing skills, Let us walk through a step-by-step guide on how to shoot a dance video and make your videos viral. So, take your paper and pen and start making notes.

Step1- Dance video concept

The concept is a very crucial part of shooting any dance video. You must decide at first whether you want just for fun dance video or a proper dance tutorial. Sometimes the choreographers start their teaching with some cool dance videos. And then they conduct workshops online as well as offline and teach the same video choreography.

Therefore, start brainstorming different ideas about your dance videos.

Step-2 Select a platform

If it is tik tok or Instagram reel, you will have a limitation of time. However, for youtube, there are no boundaries. I would recommend that shoot a proper video for Youtube. And make small reels/ videos for other social media platforms. Youtube has the advantage of copyright to keep your choreography safe and keep away from stealing.

Step-3 Song selection

It is an important step. Firstly, research some other dancers who run successfully you tube channels with your niche. Take some inspiration from your favorite dancers. Analyze what kind of songs they choose. And mind it, NEVER EVER COPY AND PASTE. That can be a huge black spot on your reputation and career.

Step-4 Choreograph your dance video

Be unique with your dance choreography. It is good to take inspiration from other dancers. But your style should define your dancing skill. Now that is the real-time when you get into action. 

For choreography, you can have a partner or a troupe, or even a solo. No matter what number of dancers are, the main thing is to show your talent.

Step -5 Rehearse and plan your shots

While you are rehearsing, you should plan your shot size and camera angles. You don’t have to be a pro in the technical part. If possible hire a cameraman. Just loading a camera on a tripod might make the video dull. So, it is always good to change different angles and take the privilege of a dance video. 

Step-6 For outdoor shoots or studios plan for at least 2-3 dance performances in one go

Yeah, this is the thing when I shoot my friend’s dance videos. It is always good to plan for at least 2-3 dances. As the studio or the technical team charges according to the hours’ shift. The studio rent is based on hours. if a cameraman charges for 8 hours shift, Then utilize that time in shooting at least 2 dance videos. By this, you save time as well as money.

Step-7 Costumes and Make-up

Costumes and make-up are vital aspects of any performing art. So, it is always better to plan costumes and make-up relevant to your dance video. You don’t have to be glittery or shimmery all the tie while you choose a costume. A simple yet presentable costume will make a great impact on your dance video.

Step-8 Dance video Shooting day

Now is the D-day of your first shoot. Be calm, don’t rush, seek blessings of your faith, and just do it! Take as many shots as you can. Retakes are a must. Just avoid a rush to wrap up unless you are satisfied. Because once you are done with shooting you have to deal with it.

Step-9 Editing

Editing is where your dance video will give your talent an aesthetic vibe. Do not put too many filters or transitions. Keep it simple and subtle. And do not forget to put the title and your name.

Step-10 Final Task- Upload your dance video

Now it is time to click the upload button and go live with your video. Make small snippets of your video to post on other social media platforms, to gain traffic. And, don’t forget the BTS shots
