When I was watching some dance performances on a dance show these days, I realized that every choreography and dance movement was the same. Not just in the same performance but also from the previous performance. It was just shuffled from the first step to the last step. Every dance choreography had some acrobatics or every other dancer was doing a cartwheel during the performance no matter what the performance or the song needs.

I felt what a disaster in the performing arts, where every performance looks just the same, and not even the judges who are experts in that dance show spotted that.

So, after years of learning classical dance, I felt like writing this blog about how to overcome choreography monotony by analyzing its causes and resulting in an effective masterpiece.

Causes of choreography Monotony along with solutions

Let us have a sneak peek into the causes of choreography monotony. This will help you to analyze the flaws in previous performances.

choreography monotony

The foundation of choreography: learn a basic and classical dance style

The first and foremost cause of choreography monotony is that the dance does not have a base. I know this sounds really basic. But our classical dance no matter what you choose has all the answers about choreography.

As Indian classical dancers, we are blessed to have 7 classical dance styles that are a part of our culture and heritage. Learning our ancient classical dance not only gives you a base for your dance but brushes up your choreographic skills. Learning modern dance is not bad, however, it is influenced by some of our ancient dances where all the techniques are not encrypted or do not have a scientific or spiritual background.

That is why it is highly recommended to try to learn one type of classical dance where you’ll find your niche in your choreographic skill.

Lack of research

Secondly, research is a crucial step in choreography that the dancers always skip. Lack of research never opens your doors to experiment and implement new art forms in your choreography. Working with horse blinders in a big disaster where the audience can easily spot choreography monotony.

So, it is necessary to research what the song requires, what music is added, what the character requires, and what will be the impact on the audience. Just adding some random hook steps will never touch the viewers and will find them boring and monotonous.

Copy and Paste in Choreography is a big NO

If you don’t want to be claimed for copyright issues and be in a soup, never try copying others’ steps. Also, do not try to copy, shuffle and paste your own steps. It may end to demolish your choreographic career in monotonous steps. That’s why, it is best to follow the above first two steps to avoid the third step.

Crave for instant success

We all know that social media has made an impact on our life and especially the lives of artists. Choreographing for a few views is never recommended as our viewer’s memory is also limited in that sense. The more you gain success the faster your viewers forget about your art piece. It is in short a mirage of fame.

If your choreography should become a masterpiece and stay in the audience’s heart. Never run behind the view and choreograph until you’re done in minutes. Give your choreography ample time to bud, rise, and nourish.

To sum up, our dance form must reach the hearts of the viewers and not in the like buttons which are temporary. So, it is important to understand and analyze our performance to grow which in turn results in an impactful performance.
