Are you dreaming of starting a dance studio? Dance has been a fun activity no matter regardless of age, gender, or place you are staying in. So, let us put on your dancing shoes and start planning your dream dance studio along with this ultimate guide.

Location of your dance studio

Before you start your dance studio, it is highly important to choose the right location where more students can easily commute and attend your classes regularly. Most beginners make the common mistake of opening their dance classes either in remote locations or in their houses.

If you are a beginner and don’t have funds to rent or purchase a hall then it is exceptional. But, searching for a remote location just because it is cheap as compared to the city location can sabotage your successful dance class.

Dimensions: with a chart for your dance studio

Here are examples of dimensions of an ideal dance class based on the number of students who can dance freely without any obstacles.

Dimensions in ft.Number of Students
12 x 12 ft.15
12 x 15 ft.25
15 x 15 ft.30
15 x 18 ft.40

The dimensions might vary as compared to the height of each person. Another difference is if you are teaching only for kids, the number of students might increase.

Ventilation

It is obvious that a dance studio should be well-ventilated. Windows should be large enough and well-lit. The windows should be soundproof framed so that the noise will not interrupt if you are shooting a dance video.

Floor plan

A floor plan in a dance studio differs as per the requirement of the studio owner. However, make sure that the floor plan is in rectangular shape with no beams or pillars coming in between. If so, they should be covered by using some curtain or interior.

Flooring

Well, This is a vast topic of discussion, which type of flooring to use for a dance studio. But, this completely depends on what type of dance style you are going to teach.

For ballet, tap dance and even classical-based dances hardwood floor is the best option. It absorbs about 60% of shock and also gives a premium look.

But, if there are budget constraints in the beginning, you can go for Vinyl flooring. It is less expensive than hardwood floors, Moreover, it is slip-resistant, easy to clean, and suitable for all types of performance.

So, it is your choice which is the perfect floor to choose.

Walls

The walls of a dance studio are usually painted black or white based on the requirements of your dance style. But I would recommend painting white, as it attracts more light, and is suitable for dark wall art and if you need a dark backdrop you can attach curtain rods where you can place curtains for any special performance.

Interior

Interior is a very subjective part and completely depends on the owner’s liking. If your studio is only for teaching then walls can be covered with mirrors and nothing else. But, if you are going to shoot a dance video, then I would recommend having a large attractive wall art. Using a vinyl sticker of your dance studio name or a neon sign is a trending way to not just give an aesthetic look but also help promote your studio name in dance videos.

Mirror

A mirror wall is an inevitable aspect of every dance studio. A mirror acts as a feedback mechanism when you are performing.

The ideal height of the mirrors from 6ft. To 8ft. Depending on the ceiling of your studio. some studios have mobile mirrors that are easily movable and can be set aside if you need to shoot a dance video.

Equipment

Some dance studios do not require any dance equipment. Except for ballet. They require a ’barre’- a handrail that provides support to the dancer for training.

Technology

A good four-speaker music system is required for any dance studio. I have seen some studios where they had kept their speakers attached to a tripod in two corners of the hall. It was a little inconvenient as the dancers kept bumping into the tripod. It was adding clutter to the space. So, I would recommend placing the speakers on the wall to prevent hurdles while moving in the hall.

The second important thing that I would recommend is a wireless lapel microphone system. Huge hall dance classes may require a good microphone for better communication.

Lighting also comes under the technology you are using. The usage of studio lights with a soft filter is the best for any dance studio with a dark background. They will work best for dance classes as well as your dance videos.

Marketing

Now you are all set with your dance studio, All you need is to attract more and more students to your studio and also invite other dancers. In order to attract more students and introduce them to your studio.

The first thing you can do is to invite a guest and established dancer to conduct a workshop or shoot a dance video for free. Established dancing will definitely be your marketing carrier and help you to attract more students to your dance class.

Other facilities for a dance studio

You can provide other facilities which are not that important, but if you do? You can even rent your studio for other dancers as well to conduct their classes or dance workshops.

Some of these facilities are,

  1. Restroom
  2. Changing room or lounge for outside dancers
  3. Parking
  4. Pantry

I hope the above guidelines will help you to kickstart your dream dance studio and let your wings fly. Happy dancing!
