Dance competitions are a huge business and is every dancer or performer’s dream to win that shining trophy, and feel proud. So, here are genuine tips that will definitely help you to nail a dance competition and impress the judges on a beginner’s level.
Before I start with the blog, here’s a disclaimer. The below tips are not for winning a competition. Winning a competition is a very complicated topic and has a lot of aspects, which are mostly dependent on luck.
But this blog is just to help you stay prepared as a contestant and make the best use of the opportunity and platform that the competition organizers have offered.
Observe the previous dance competitions
This is a very important task that every performer or choreographer should follow. It helps on what parameters the judges or audiences like. Moreover, you can understand what mistakes the other dancers were committing. Some minute mistakes also can have a huge impact on losing the dance competition.
So, note down what mistakes the others were making. It is a great way for you to think and implement while you are stepping on stage.
Understand the type of dance competition
If it is just a single genre type of competition, like only classical dance then you have very less options and uniqueness to show. But if it is open to all types of competition, then you have the sky to experiment with or try trending music and choreograph it in your own style. It is a great way to impress judges as well as the audience.
But, if it is a very specific themed competition, like a classical dance competition, then you have a very limited choice to perform. However, you can always try something different by changes in your choreography, adding a social message, or a small dance drama (Nritya Natya) which has some latest happenings or events where you can amaze the judges with your distinctive performance.
Sometimes Basic or traditional dance performances also helps
If you are not a choreographer and don’t understand how to experiment, then you can always stick to the traditional dance. Sometimes traditional performances also can create a huge impact on the audience and judges.
Trust me, Our dance troupe had performed a traditional ‘pushpanjali’ and ‘jatiswaram’ which is taught on a very basic level. Yet we had won First prize in a National Level Dance competition. So, from my personal experience, a traditional dance style performed elegantly can also be a win-win situation.
Rehearse your dance thoroughly
It is always said, that you should perform like stage during rehearsals so that you will perform like rehearsals on stage. This is the secret I have been always following while I rehearse or perform. To know more about effective rehearsal strategies, I have written a separate blog where you will get more valuable tips. Here’s the link.
Healthy Competition is the key to a successful performer
Competitions sometimes are marketing tactics by a few organizations and are just a source of entertainment. So, every performer should understand that failing in a competition doesn’t make you a loser or a bad dancer. If you have put in enough effort and given 100% to your performance, you will definitely win the competition.
And if you lose, you get to learn new things. And you never know if you will get noticed by someone for a project, which is your biggest victory.
In a nutshell, understanding criticism and loss will not make you a failure. Instead, you will grow bigger as a performer and you will definitely win your next competition.
