Navratri is a holy festival where we worship the goddess Devi with music and dance. This colorful and divine festival is incomplete without music and dance. So, in this  Navratri special blog, let us understand the concept of the nine colors of dance i.e. Navras (the Nine emotions) the modifications in them, and some simple exercises that you can easily do at your home.

What are the Navras?

The Navras are nothing but the most basic nine moods or emotions. We use these kinds of emotions in our day-to-day lives.

They are:

  1. Hasya ( joy)
  2. Karuna (sorrow)
  3. Vibhatsa (disgust)
  4. Shringar (Love)
  5. Adbhut/Vismay (surprise)
  6. Bhaya (fear)
  7. Veer (pride)
  8. Raudra (Anger)
  9. Shanta (peace)

Transformation of one Navras to the other

Transformation of one Navras to the other is one of the most basic exercises in a few activities. For example from Raudra to Karuna, or from Bhaya to Hasya, depending upon the situation these navras keep on interchanging.

Degree of Expression

The intensity of these navras depends upon what the situation requires. For example, the Karuna ras shown in the failure of an exam will be much lesser as compared to the karuna ras shown in the death of some loved one. The actor must exercise the degree of expression along with these emotions and practice their expressions.
